I Almost Bought a Used Trumpf Machine. The Total Cost Table Changed My Mind.
A purchasing coordinator's story of comparing used TRUMPF machines, budget 60W MOPA fiber lasers, and new equipment—and how total cost of ownership beat sticker price.
Last September, my boss dropped a folder on my desk with a sticky note. “Look into laser marking for the shop floor.”
That was it. No budget range. No timeline. Just a vague directive from the VP of Operations, who’d apparently read an article about traceability and decided our metal parts needed serial numbers.
I’m a purchasing coordinator at a 120-person metal fabrication company. I handle about 70 orders a year—cutting tools, work boots, safety glasses, office supplies, the occasional CNC replacement part. When I took over purchasing in 2021, I got to know our vendors fast. No installation. No training. No fume extraction system—turns out vaporized metal is not great to breathe. Several listings didn’t even include the computer or marking software to run the machine. Import duties? Taxes? Nobody mentioned them. I had to track down those numbers myself.

The TruPrint 2000 Price Was a Wake-Up Call
My boss forwarded a link about metal 3D printing around week four. “Should we look into this?” he asked, like it was a new coffee machine.

- Used TRUMPF: $34,000 purchase. Add $3,000 shipping and rigging. Add $4,000 for the seller’s technician to fly in and commission it. No warranty unless I paid extra. Basic service contract: $2,500/year. Five year estimate: around $50,000 if nothing major breaks. If the source goes, add another $10,000.
- New TRUMPF marking system: $52,000 all-in. Installation, training for two operators, two-year warranty, and a service plan that costs $1,800/year after. Five year estimate: roughly $61,000. The highest number upfront. But there was no line item on the quote marked “mystery.”
Here’s what jumped out at me. The difference between the used TRUMPF and the new one was about $11,000 over five years. For $11,000, we got a warranty, actual local support, and no “surprise invoice” risk. The MOPA machine was $40,000 cheaper on paper, but if it went down for a week—at roughly $5,000 a day in lost shop time—the savings would evaporate fast.
In hindsight, the answer was obvious. At the time, I spent three sleepless nights redoing the numbers.
What We Did, And What I’d Tell You
We bought the new TRUMPF. Finance approved it surprisingly quickly, and I genuinely think it was because the quote had no hidden buckets. Every dollar was accounted for before we signed. There’s something deeply satisfying about an invoice that matches the price you were quoted.
Installation took two days in November 2024. Both shop-floor operators were fully trained by end of week. We’ve had no downtime beyond a sensor calibration glitch that the service rep walked us through over the phone.
Was it the right call for us? Yes. Is used equipment ever a good deal? Sure—if you can inspect it, verify its operating hours, get the warranty in writing, and budget 15% above the asking price for contingencies. But if a seller can’t tell you why they’re selling, walk away.
And if you’re tempted by that cheap, imported laser: I’m not saying it’s garbage. I’m saying the four-digit purchase price is just the down payment. Add shipping, wiring, extraction, software, training, and a maintenance fund. Then compare total cost against the risk of downtime.
The best advice I got through this whole thing came from an operations manager at a networking event. He said: “When you get a quote, ask ‘what’s NOT included?’ If the vendor hesitates, you have your answer.”
I haven’t bought a major piece of equipment without asking that question since. And neither should you.
